The three
wings of the Palestra Grande behave like a whole articulated system of museums.
As such, it
needs to gain a recognizable identity, a clear program and a wider
accessibility to all of its spaces. This new complex logics require a center of
gravity.
The pool, a
large void presence in the center of the garden, offers its great potential for
an interpretation and mediation of the entire space. Its physical and geometric
features not only bind it to the place, but even reveal the role of geometric
generator of the relationships with the surrounding spaces, such as the
Amphitheater. The great museum potential of the Palestra Grande consists of the
variety of its offer and in the ratio between closed rooms and the open court,
according to the best Pompeian tradition.
